Wheat straw plastic is a sustainable, biodegradable and compostable new material, made using wheat straw which is a natural by-product of wheat production. After the wheat grains are harvested, the wheat stalk remains. Traditionally, this was considered a waste material and in fact, was often burned, contributing to further air pollution.
Today, however, these valuable wheat stalks are reclaimed and renewed, creating wheat straw plastic which is a sustainable alternative to petroleum derived (normal) plastic. Wheat stalks contain a compound called Lignin, which helps the wheat to stand upright and gives strength and durability - essential for a material such as plastic. When Lignin is combined with sugar, this creates wheat straw plastic which is comparable to normal plastic but is even better as it is also sustainable, biodegradable and compostable.
